High Altitude Hospitality

Susong Dalaga.

The latest challenge undertaken by the Pampanga Bikepacking Community (PBC) was a high-altitude expedition from Nabuclod to the majestic Mount Susong Dalaga. This was not just a ride; it was a commitment to an extreme adventure, packed with anticipation, excitement, and the undeniable sense of dread that comes when facing a challenging mountain trail.

THE MOUNTAIN BECKONS

The journey began at the jump-off point in Nabuclod—a familiar gathering place that quickly filled with riders, gear, and supplies. Over coffee and conversation, the air hummed with nervous energy. The veterans knew what was coming: a route characterized by steep climbs, thick talahib (tall grass), and muddy paths, especially with the recent threat of rain. Everyone understood the stakes: to conquer the mountain, you need more than just a strong bike; you need immense willpower and the solidarity of your group.

The ascent began almost immediately. The trail offered no easy warm-up, quickly demanding maximum effort from both man and machine. The bikes were fully loaded, and the slopes were unrelenting. We found ourselves constantly navigating treacherous sections, where the terrain was often so steep—sobrang tarik—that cycling became almost impossible. There were numerous moments where riders had to dismount, struggling to push their bicycles up the agonizing gradients. Some of the cyclists even commented on the bikes themselves, seeming to “give up” under the strain. It was a true grind, requiring tactical stops for quick energy boosts and shared encouragement.

Despite the physical toll, the views offered intermittent but powerful rewards. Even on the toughest stretches, the panoramic landscapes that opened up with every conquered peak were breathtaking, offering postcard-perfect scenes that made the hard work instantly worthwhile.

A TWIST OF FATE AT THE SUMMIT

After hours of relentless climbing, pushing, and pedaling through the demanding terrain, the group finally arrived at the destination: the high ground overlooking Mount Susong Dalaga. A wave of euphoria swept over the community. The sight of the stunning view was an overwhelming reward for the day’s immense physical effort. Everyone quickly began scouting the best spots to set up camp, eager to rest and enjoy the mountain air.

However, Mother Nature had a dramatic surprise in store. Just as the preparations for the evening began, the weather turned hostile. A fierce storm suddenly descended, bringing heavy, relentless rain coupled with powerful winds. It felt as though the mountain itself was telling the group they were not welcome. The planned campout became instantly impossible. With gear soaking wet and the wind threatening to tear down any structure, the group made the crucial decision to abandon the camp and seek proper shelter.

THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS

In an act that defined the true spirit of community and the ethos of bikepacking, the group reached out to the local katutubo (native residents) of the area, asking if there was any structure that could offer protection from the violent storm. The response was immediate and heartwarming. A local family generously offered their simple kubo (a traditional hut) for the night.

It was here, within the humble, safe walls of the local residence, that the adventure found its unexpected, but perfect, conclusion. The group cooked their meals, shared stories, and finally rested, safe and sound from the storm raging outside. The following morning, the sun rose, and the community packed up, grateful and safe, before heading home.

The entire expedition reinforced a profound truth: while the adventure is about conquering the trail, the most special part of any bikepacking ride is the human connection and the unexpected kindness of others. The simple act of hospitality from the locals turned what could have been a dangerous situation into a profound lesson in community spirit. Video Link: https://youtu.be/5RIQ-libKdI
